Preview of “Beyond the Linear”, Salford Art Gallery

What a fantastic turn out for the preview of my solo exhibition “Beyond the Linear” last night at Salford Art Gallery. It was wonderful to share the opening of my latest show with both familiar faces and new ones too! Special thanks to Luke Moore, Helen Milroy and Isabella Baker who took part in “Roll Play” (a unique couple of performances we devised especially for the event) and all who managed to make it over despite the bitterly cold weather and the pretty dire traffic / public transport situation.

If you haven’t managed to see it yet, there is plenty of time to visit as it will be running until 28th April 2019. For opening hours and more information please click here. There will also be an artist’s talk with a difference… stay tuned to find out more!

Article in Bees Blogs

A huge thank you goes out to Brian Wild of Bees Blogs for featuring my new solo show “Beyond the Linear” in his blog. He writes:

“Emma Lloyd is a Manchester based contemporary artist working mainly in text. Emma has exhibited both nationally and internationally, most recently in ‘Art of the Book’ and ‘Summer Salon’ at Seager Gray Gallery in California , ‘The World of Paper Products’ Hanok Village, Jeonju South Korea which featured art in paper from a global list of artists, as well as Belgium and South Africa.

I first came across Emma’s work at Saul Hay Gallery’s exhibition ‘Material Matters‘ in August 2017 and was astounded by the intricacy and attention to detail which formed her work. Her pieces are beautifully constructed textual sculptural artworks, which grabbed the attention of, and delighted, visitors to the exhibition.

For this latest exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery will again be exploring language, visual puzzles and cognitive properties. I’m looking forward to seeing this latest offering from Emma and would recommend you put a date in your diary.”

Show information:

As beings we take comfort from structure and the organisation of ideas. Nowhere is this more evident than in our methods of communication.

Text is the visualisation of language; the simplification of meaning. Superficially ordered to the eye, complexities manifest once we begin to process. What is the context? What is its intention?

“Beyond the Linear” exposes subtleties in our exchanges and probes the nature of communication itself. Exploring the cognitive properties of sight through a series of visual puzzles; Lloyd identifies the shift between looking and reading. Content and form merge to complicate and acknowledge language’s accessibility.

The diverse range of media on offer invites the viewer to explore the connotations of materials and their ability to shape narrative. Lloyd believes matter to be integral to artistic process since it has the capacity to connect with prior experiences. Such triggers are considered when she examines the impact of the contemporary digital landscape and its effect on us as tactile beings.

In an age of marked polarisation and renewed discourse regarding the nature of content and dialogue’s authenticity, Lloyd believes it crucial to investigate the fundamentals of communication. Through this we gain a deeper, more critical insight into how our understanding is shaped and disseminated.

Selected for upcoming publication “WordPower: Language as Medium”

I am thrilled to announce that my work will be included in an upcoming title from Library X “WordPower: Language as Medium” (edited by Sarah Peace). The book will include pieces from established, mid career and emerging artists whose artistic practices and projects are realised primarily with text. It is due to be released late 2018.

Upcoming Solo Show: Salford Museum and Art Gallery

Not long until “Beyond the Linear” at Salford Museum and Art Gallery (running from Saturday, 8th December 2018 to Sunday, 28th April 2019). Lots of exciting things planned for my first big solo… I can’t wait to bring it all together! For more information please watch this space, connect with me on social media or visit their site.

Performance at Chester Bandstand

Yesterday I took part in the first ever site specific live art performance at Chester Bandstand; a beautiful riverside venue located in The Groves. Beginning at 2pm, the piece was created by responding to the location and the bandstand structure. Was great fun to be a part of their summer programme and the weather was thankfully extremely kind to us (only a little drizzle and gusts of wind to contend with!). It even delivered a rainbow at the culmination of events – a delightful surprise!

Goodbye Artwork Atelier, Hello Wellington Studios!

Moving in day today! Thrilled to pick up the keys to my new space at Wellington Studios over in Ancoats. Will be a little while before I can move in properly as everything is still being built / kitted out and I have some painting to do with my new studio buddy Sabine Kraft…

Really lovely to have been able to make the move with a number of fellow Artwork Atelier artists too following the sad news that the building we had called home for a number of years was earmarked for demolition.
